The State Government has recently extended Complying Development to include medium-density housing – terraces, dual occupancy dwellings, or buildings containing up to three or four dwellings. The Glebe Society welcomes a proposal that has a good chance of success, and thus ensuring the permanent occupation and conservation of Bellevue, and continuing amenity for the community, and in particular users of the popular Waterfront Walk. However, there are matters that need further clarification and additional issues that should be addressed.

The Society believes the time has come to relax those conditions to allow the venue to operate for longer hours, and also to take bookings. It may be possible to relax others as well, at least for a trial period.

This is the only wooden building surviving in Glebe Point Road, and the only wooden shop in Glebe. There is a case for retaining elements of the late Victorian facade, such as the splayed doorway, iron columns and associated windows, and certainly for recording the building comprehensively and attaching an interpretative plaque

The Greater Sydney Commission has hit the headlines with its release of the draft Future Transport Strategy. The key promise is that with the division of Sydney into three hubs, the Western Parkland City based on Badgerys Creek Airport, the Central River City based on Parramatta, and the Eastern Harbour City based on the current CBD, by 2056, most people will enjoy a thirty minute commute.

Fifty years ago the bays’ foreshores, and all the watercourses that drained into them, were lined with industrial uses, most of them in terminal decline, and many already defunct and derelict. The biggest drain was the concreted Johnstons Creek. At the Children’s Hospital, Camperdown, it was joined by a tributary, Orphan School Creek.

About thirty residents turned out to hear about the proposal for a 68-place Childcare Centre to be located in this remarkable Late Victorian Church Hall, a Heritage Item and landmark that has served the Glebe community in many capacities over it long life.

Locals will have noticed that turfing and tree planting in the open space at Harold Park, from the Tramsheds to Wigram Rd, was completed some months ago, and people are asking: ‘When will the park be opened?’
