Gale Edwards, international theatre director, led a highly successful Glebe Voices at the Blackwattle Café on 18 February. The capacity crowd, sitting in every nook and cranny (including the outside areas, peering in through doorways), listened enthralled to Gale’s account of her career in theatre.

On an exceptionally wet evening we had a most enlightening address from Martin Lawrence who, given his research knowledge on ocean acoustics, was asked in 1994 by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to assist with a technical matter related to the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

Glebe Voices: Tranby Refelections – Tranby Aboriginal College – Monday 8th July

Tranby Aboriginal College in Mansfield Street is Australia’s oldest Indigenous education provider, operating for some 55 years. A not-for-profit co-operative, the College has seen thousands of students graduate and go on to make lasting changes in their lives and those of their families and communities. Darlene Hoskins-Mackenzie, Interim Chair of the Board of Directors, will lead a Glebe Voices session at the College during NAIDOC week and introduce the work of the College and its plans for the future including strengthening ties with the local community. Richard Spencer will be the guest speaker at “Glebe Voices” on 19th April, at 6.00 p.m. for a 6.30 p.m. start. The location for the April event will be at the Ancient Briton hotel, in the private Upstairs room, corner of Glebe Point Road and Bridge Road. The title of his talk is “Do we really care? Investing in our communities.”

Glebe Voices, a recent innovation for the Glebe Society, hosts a significant speaker each month or so to talk to members about their life, career, Glebe, or their life in Glebe. On 22nd Feb Ann Corthoys, ARC Professorial Fellow at the University of Sydney, will present a talk at Blackwattle Cafe, Glebe (Bellevue, at the bottom end of Leichhardt Street, Glebe). Her talk is titled: “Radical Glebe – People and Places of Significance in the Radical Movements in the 60’s and 70’s.
Glebe Voices – David McIntosh – 10th Nov

Over the next six months the Society will invite distinguished and interesting speakers from members, those who live in Glebe or have had a special affiliation with Glebe. The series will be inaugurated by Dr. David McIntosh AM who introduced and maintains one of Glebe’s major Cultural Assets, the Glebe Music Festival. His topic will be the Origins of the Glebe Festival, which will lead to discussion on origins of community events, enhancing communities, other music festivals, and of course music.
