Off Broadway: Chippendale Small Gallery Tour Photo Album

Posted on 30th June 2013

About 20 Glebe Society members and friends ventured across Broadway into the comparatively unknown territory of Chippendale to explore its varied galleries and art spaces. The walking tour took in contemporary art, both Australian and Chinese, a local artists’ co-operative, public sculpture and a stunning US photographic exhibition – all just just 5 – 7 minutes’ walk from Broadway – and included lunch at Mission Restaurant & NG Gallery.

Christmas in the Glebe Town Hall Photo Album

Posted on 31st December 2013

The Society’s 2013 Christmas party was the first to be held in the gloriously refurbished Glebe Town Hall. About 90 members and friends attended and we had the pleasure of the company of the Lord Mayor, Cr Clover Moore, who drew the winners of our fund-raising raffle.
We were particularly pleased to welcome Marianne von Knobelsdorf, a long-time Glebe resident and member of the Society. Marianne returned to live in her home country of Germany a couple of years ago but is currently making an extended visit to Glebe.

Changes on the Glebe Foreshore

The sign might say “Path ends here”, but not for much longer! Work began recently on the last section of the Glebe Foreshore Walk from Ferry Road to Bridge Road. Taken on the first Thursday of the recent bushfires from the backyard of 79 Ferry Rd. There was a small patch of blue sky on the western horizon, which lit the Anzac Bridge and houses in a spooky bluish light against the background of a smoky sky.

Destroying Our Heritage? Glebe Island Bridge

Posted on 5th November 2013

‘Oh, no!’ I recoiled when I heard that the NSW Government was planning to sell two iconic heritage buildings in Bridge St, Sydney. My second thought, just a moment later, was ‘Yeah, well, governments don’t have a good track record as custodians of heritage items! Perhaps, the private sector may do better.’

The Challenge of Unsolicited Development Proposals

Posted on 30th September 2013

The foreshores of Blackwattle Bay are likely to see a major new development phase in the next few years. As much of these foreshores is publicly owned, the community rightly expects that it will have a strong voice in decisions as to future uses/development and that the public interest is protected. This, of course, is not a guaranteed outcome.
