Walk Report: Glebe’s Late Victorian Streetscapes
Posted on 1st May 2024The first of three Glebe Society Guided Walks inspired by people and events 50 years ago is described. The walk, in April, explored the streetscapes of the Toxteth Heritage Conservation Area, an area now recognised for its historic and architectural significance and commemorated in the book by Bernard and Kate Smith, ‘The Architectural Character of Glebe’.

Planning matters
Posted on 27th March 2024The Glebe Society has made several presentations and submissions to planning authorities in the last month or so. These include responding with our concerns about the State government’s plans to increase the number of low- and mid-rise multi-dwelling residences, and the Society’s opposition to a developer’s attempt to demolish an early cottage in the Hereford and Forest Lodge Heritage Conservation Area. There’s also good news: the Glebe Society’s efforts to stop the demolition of 181 St Johns Road have been successful.

‘The Cream of the Coast’ in Forest Lodge
Posted on 27th March 2024Stripped of its paint during recent renovations, the wall of a former corner shop in Forest Lodge revealed a fragment of a Streets Ice Cream advertisement before being once more retired beneath layers of paint. The fragment was from Streets’ tagline, ‘The Cream of the Coast’.

Next Players in the Pub
Posted on 27th March 2024The next Players in the Pub features a 1946 play with particular relevance to current world events. First performed in March 1946, The Shepherd and the Hunter deals with British/Jewish/Arab relations at that time, two years before the State of Israel was declared.

82 Wentworth Park Road Glebe DA approved
Posted on 27th March 2024The Glebe Society submitted innovative proposals for improving public housing at 82 Wentworth Park Road. The State Government had other plans and their proposal to demolish and replace the existing housing was approved. It is discussed in this article.

Glebe Music Festival 2024 and Autumn Concert
Posted on 27th March 2024The Glebe Music Festival starts early this year. The main Festival takes place as usual in November, but this year, a Special Autumn Concert of works by Spanish composers – played on guitar and cello by Duo Evocaciones – is scheduled for April.

NSW Government Planning Proposals
Posted on 28th February 2024Two recent proposals will have impacts on Glebe. ‘Transport Oriented Development’ is for eight priority high growth areas which have been identified for accelerated rezoning. ‘Diverse and Well-Located Homes’ proposes increased densities within 800 metres of light rail stations, mixed use zones and local centres.

Posted on 27th March 2024Duncan reports some positive developments for the conservation of Bidura House and the Glebe Island Bridge. Less positive are the State government’s latest announcements on parking at the new Sydney Fish Market and plans to rezone parts of Glebe.
