Tour of Glebe’s places of worship – 28th March

This walking tour will provide a guided visit to four religious buildings in Glebe: a Chinese Temple and Joss House dating from 1898; a Chapel with fine acoustics in the grounds of historic St Scholastica’s College; and two churches, St James’ and St John’s, each with an interesting history and beautiful features including stained glass windows. A guide associated with each building will show us around. Afternoon tea will be served at St John’s at the end of the tour.

Come one, come all, to this year’s Christmas Party. It’s a celebration of the season and a final knees up occasion to mark the end of the Glebe Sesquicentenary year and the Glebe Society’s 40th Anniversary. This year it will be held at the Wentworth Park centre on Friday 11th December.
Guided History Walk of Glebe – 18th October

Come and join the History Walk on 18th October and find out more about our many wonderful heritage buildings.
The Walk will start at Benledi, 186 Glebe Point Road, at 1.30 p.m. and will take about two hours. It will be followed by afternoon tea at Benledi from 3.30pm to 5pm and a talk by our local historian, Max Solling.
Wentworth Park Games – 27th September

The Wentworth Park Games will be held again this year on Sunday 27th September 2009, at Wentworth Park. Bring your family and friends and join the fun. There will be community games with teams representing Glebe and Forest Lodge competing with Pyrmont and Ultimo, dog races for your family pet and heritage displays. The Wentworth Park Games gives residents of Glebe, Forest Lodge, Pyrmont and Ultimo a chance to rediscover this great park. The day features a wide variety of fun sporting events and displays to celebrate the history of our wonderful park.

Celebrate the Glebe Sesquicentenary with a Rowing Regatta on Blackwattle Bay, on Saturday 29th August, starting at 10.00 a.m.
To mark their role in the sporting history of Glebe, The Glebe Rowing Club (formed in 1879) and The Sydney University Women’s Rowing Club (formed in 1967) are combining to hold a Rowing Regatta on Blackwattle Bay – the first for over ten years!

2009 is the 150th anniversary of the creation of Glebe as a municipality. Residents, government agencies, schools, community groups and local businesses are invited to join in the celebration of Glebe’s rich and vibrant past and present.The first event will be the burying of a Time Capsule by Lord Mayor, Cr Clover Moore MP, at Jubilee fountain on Sunday 2 August 2009 at 11:00am.

2009 Glebe NAIDOC Event: Respecting our Elders Nurturing our Youth

This is the first year that the Glebe community has organised its own program for NAIDOC week. This is a collaboration with Eora TAFE, Glebe Police, Glebe Public School, Glebe Youth Service , Glebe Chamber of Commerce, Tranby. Aboriginal Employment Services, City of Sydney and community members. This invitation is open to everyone in the community. Please show your support on 4th July.

“Thirsty Thursday” for July will be held on Thursday 2nd July at 6.30 p.m. at Na Zdrowie restaurant, a Polish restaurant, at 161 Glebe Point Road, Glebe. Thirsty Thursday events are an opportunity for Glebe Society members to meet at some of Glebe’s more interesting restaurants and enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed atmosphere.
Indigenous art on display at St Schols

St Scholastica’s College in Glebe will hold an Aboriginal art exhibition from 12-14 June to showcase the talents of emerging indigenous artists, including some work by the school’s own talented students. The funds raised by the exhibition will go to the school’s Indigenous Fund to support current and future indigenous students.
Free Oral History workshops in Glebe

The Wireless House in Foley Park is a unique part of Glebe’s history, a tiny building where many people gathered to listen to a wireless radio, donated by Grace Bros to the Glebe Council in 1934.
The artist, Dr Nigel Helyer, is working with the City of Sydney to ‘sonically re-activate’ the Wireless House and bring it back to life with a sculptural and interactive audio installation and website.
