Richard Spencer will be the guest speaker at “Glebe Voices” on 19th April, at 6.00 p.m. for a 6.30 p.m. start. The location for the April event will be at the Ancient Briton hotel, in the private Upstairs room, corner of Glebe Point Road and Bridge Road. The title of his talk is “Do we really care? Investing in our communities.”

Two giant Moreton Bay fig trees on the Glebe foreshore will be illuminated at sunset, when a new artwork powered by state-of-the-art lighting and wind turbine technology is switched on this month. Earth V Sky will operate each night at dusk, with the lights programmed to switch on at sunset and stay illuminated for about 90 minutes. Earth V Sky is the third public art project developed by the City of Sydney with the local Glebe community since 2006. The Lord Mayor will officially open Earth V Sky for members of the community on Tuesday, 24 April, at 5pm.

Our first social event for the year will be a Twilight Wine-tasting at the Glebe Rowing Club, Ferry Road, from 4.30 – 6.30pm on Sunday 25 March. Enjoy the last daylight-saving Sunday of the season and taste some beautiful wines from the Mediterranean and bar food from “Timbah” (Forsyth Street, Glebe). An informal occasion to meet with other members and friends.

A further Development Application (DA) has been lodged with Council for redevelopment of “Durham Court”, 417 Glebe Point Road. Council received many objections from local residents against the previous DA for this property, and the owner has now submitted this new application. The full details of the application can be viewed here. Any objections against this DA close on 13th March 2012.

The NSW Government began a comprehensive review of the state’s planning system in July 2011. The aim of the review is to create a new planning system in consultation with stakeholders and the community that meets today’s needs and priorities. The Glebe Society has made a formal submission to the review, and it can be viewed here.

Presented by the Glebe Schools Community Centre, NSW Reconciliation Council and Tranby College. This is an exciting opportunity is coming “Sundays in Glebe” for families in the Glebe area – please alert them to these events, especially the ART and MUSIC days on Sundays the 18th and 25th March respectively. There will be many great opportunities, a feed and lots of fun to be had for all!!! These events are open to the whole community.

Is planning speak a fog to you? Do you want to know how building designs are determined and how the Planning system works? If so then you may be interested in a Community Workshop REDWatch is putting on with Professor Peter Phibbs, to help everyday residents find out who decides what, how to find meaning in all that jargon – terms like DA, LEP, DCP, Master Plan, SEPP – and how residents can influence planning decisions. Peter Phibbs runs a day course at UWS aimed at non-planners and we have asked him to come to Redfern and run a session for any residents who would like to know more about planning.

Members and friends are invited to meet in restaurants in and around Glebe, usually on the first Thursday of each month at 7pm, to eat and talk with other people who live in Glebe. We visit a different restaurant each month, with varying cuisines. Our next event will be on Thursday 12th April when we will share a meal at Darbar, 134 Glebe Point Road.

The City of Sydney is holding another of it very popular “Good Neighbourhood” BBQs this Sunday, 4th March, at Foley Park, from 11am till 2pm. The event will feature the Crocodile Encounters Reptile Show, live music, children’s activities, a free BBQ, and information on safety and security initiatives in your area. All are welcome.

Glebe Voices, a recent innovation for the Glebe Society, hosts a significant speaker each month or so to talk to members about their life, career, Glebe, or their life in Glebe. On 22nd Feb Ann Corthoys, ARC Professorial Fellow at the University of Sydney, will present a talk at Blackwattle Cafe, Glebe (Bellevue, at the bottom end of Leichhardt Street, Glebe). Her talk is titled: “Radical Glebe – People and Places of Significance in the Radical Movements in the 60’s and 70’s.

Bruce Davis, 2012 Glebe has extensive foreshores stretching from the beginning of Pyrmont Bridge Road opposite Wentworth Park to the head of Rozelle Bay.  The adjoining foreshores in Pyrmont and Rozelle are also important as they are highly visible from Glebe and link to the walk and cycleways that fringe Glebe’s shores.  The preservation of […]

Glebe Society submission re dual role of Councillors and Members of Parliament

The NSW Government recently launched a discussion paper on the issue where some local government Councillors are also Members of the NSW Parliament. The Glebe Society emailed all members in December to advise of the government’s discussion paper, and we advised members that this is a very relevant issue for Glebe. The closing date for submissions was 31st January, and the Glebe Society has made its own submission, a copy of which is available here. The submission made by the Glebe Society supports the current system where it is the role of the electorate to decide whether a candidate should be elected to either role.

The Australia Day Honours list for 26th January 2012 honoured Glebe resident Professor Kathryn North with a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), “for service to medicine in the field of neuromuscular and neurogenetics research, paediatrics and child health as a clinician and academic, and to national and international professional associations”. The Glebe Society congratulates Professor North on this award.

David Mander-Jones – Memorial Service 16th Feb

A memorial service will be held for David Mander-Jones on Thursday 16th February at the Record Reign Hall, in St Johns Road, Glebe (opposite the Fire Station). The service will commence at 2.30 p.m. All are welcome as we try our best to celebrate a person who was very much loved, and a life very well lived. David, a member of the Glebe Society and the Managment Committee for many years, died on 5th July 2011, aged 75 years. David was a charming, engaging man, and he is missed by many.
