On 3rd December 2020 it will be 25 years since the Glebe Island Bridge closed. Invitation to be part of action to lobby for the it to be restored and reopened for pedestrians and cyclists.

Proposals to restore the Glebe Island Bridge for use as a walkway and cycle path are mounting. The latest is from the McKell Institute, which has proposed an active transport path linking the Opera House and Paramatta along the harbour foreshores and southern bank of the Parramatta River.

The past year has been both intensive and possibly the most significant in the 12 years of my engagement with the redevelopment of the Bays Precinct. The central agenda has been the acceleration of planning for the redevelopment of the Blackwattle Bay foreshores as part of the NSW Government’s larger agenda for the redevelopment of the Western Harbour Precinct including the Pyrmont Peninsula.

The Glebe Society accepts that Glebe Island appears to be the most appropriate site for the needed supply of concrete to the CBD and Bays area. However, the planned concentration of industrial related activities on Glebe Island will create major problems for the amenity of the many current and planned nearby residents.

The sudden death of UrbanGrowth as a strategic player following its brave (and apparently justified) refusal to accept any of the developer proposals for the White Bay power station site has returned the Bays Precinct to uncoordinated development lacking visible strategic coherence.

White Bay Power Station

However on 9 June UrbanGrowth announced none of the proposals received for the renewal of the highly significant White Bay Power Station complied sufficiently with the Government’s evaluation criteria and that as a result, UrbanGrowth would itself become the master developer for the site.

Sydney Superyacht Marina – Over-development Will Go Ahead

On 15 June the NSW Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) released its determination on the contentious modifications sought by the Superyacht Marina in Rozelle Bay. Over the last year the Glebe Society and other community members had opposed the central elements of this proposal as inappropriate over-development of the site and contrary to public interest.

Status of ‘Priority Destinations’

Preparatory work on the Pyrmont to Blackwattle Bay Waterfront Promenade is well underway. There is considerable activity in relation to the Bays Market District. A equest for proposals for the repurposing of the huge landmark and heritage classified White Bay Power Station was put out in October 2015. The heritage Glebe Island Bridge is at last included as a formal project within the Bays Precinct.

UrbanGrowth NSW has produced its third public information glossy – The Bays Precinct Sydney Transformation Plan which provides some new information, although still mainly at the level of options or high level plans. This version identifies seven key action areas and it is of significance that these now incorporate Wentworth Park (long rumoured) and ‘working towards repurposing Glebe Island Bridge’(previously invisible) into the Bays Precinct project.
