Remembrance Day 2015

About 50 people stood in soft and misty rain at the Glebe Diggers Memorial on Wednesday 11 November. Glebe Society President Ted McKeown urged us to remember: Not just ‘The War to End All Wars’, but the lesson never having been learned, those subsequent Wars as well. To remember those who lost their lives, and those whose lives were blighted by physical and psychological injury. To reflect on the endurance and stoicism of those bereft and left to carry on.

Glebe Society Anzac Centenary Lecture: “The War Memorial Movement”

The Society’s Anzac Centenary Lecture was organised to complement the theme of its Anzac Centenary Program exhibition Sacrifice, Struggle and Sorrow shown in the Southern Hall at Glebe Town Hall, October 7-23, 2015. The lecture was delivered by Professor Paul Ashton on Tuesday October 13.

The Sunset Soirée for Centipede

Friends of Centipede catered for over 80 people at the Glebe Rowing Club premises on Friday 9 October at their annual fundraiser for Centipede.

The Naming of Dave Sands Lane

The opening of Dave Sands Lane that took place on Sunday 26 July. The lane, which is at the rear of 17-31 Phillip St, is the third lane that the Society has had a hand in naming, with Bernard Lane and Melina Lane preceding this one. The lane was officially opened by Robyn Kemmis, Deputy Lord Mayor. Below is an extract from Robyn’s speech:

Report on the New Members’ night

New members were warmly welcomed to the Glebe Society at the Harold Park Hotel on July 22, a chilly evening. Introductions and reconnections were made over drinks, then eating and more drinking around tables where the challenges began!

Soiree for Centipede 2014

The annual ‘Sunset Soiree’ for Centipede was held on Friday 7 November at the Glebe Rowing Club. A little over 50 people in attendance enjoyed live music provided by local chanteuse Hannah Robinson, the well-chosen words of Glebe Public School’s principal Vicki Pogulis and a most convivial evening under the full moon.

Glebe Street Fair 2014

Despite a worrying downpour of rain the 31st anniversary of the Glebe Street Fair saw the expected thousands of visitors head to Glebe Point Rd to enjoy free entertainment across three stages, more than 250 stalls and the 100 or so businesses that line the street.

Off Broadway: Chippendale Small Gallery Tour Photo Album

About 20 Glebe Society members and friends ventured across Broadway into the comparatively unknown territory of Chippendale to explore its varied galleries and art spaces. The walking tour took in contemporary art, both Australian and Chinese, a local artists’ co-operative, public sculpture and a stunning US photographic exhibition – all just just 5 – 7 minutes’ walk from Broadway – and included lunch at Mission Restaurant & NG Gallery.

The Society’s 2013 Christmas party was the first to be held in the gloriously refurbished Glebe Town Hall. About 90 members and friends attended and we had the pleasure of the company of the Lord Mayor, Cr Clover Moore, who drew the winners of our fund-raising raffle.
We were particularly pleased to welcome Marianne von Knobelsdorf, a long-time Glebe resident and member of the Society. Marianne returned to live in her home country of Germany a couple of years ago but is currently making an extended visit to Glebe.

Love Your Park 2 – Mitchell Street Photo Gallery

Love Your Park 2 was a project co-ordinated by the Glebe Society in 2011, undertaken by local youth under the guidance of a community artist, to create a lovely wall mural at the corner of Mitchell and Glebe Streets, Glebe. The project was funded by the City of Sydney.

A Tree Planting Day was held at the Paddy Gray Reserve on Sunday 1st August 2010, to improve the habitat for Superb Fairy-wrens and help to keep them in Glebe.

Christmas Party 2009 Photo Album

The Society’s 2009 Christmas party was held at the Wentworth Park function centre. About 95 people attended.
Thanks to Anne Fraser and her band of helpers, and to the Wentworth Park Sporting Complex Trust for making it such a memorable evening.
These photos by Bruce Davis show some of the activities on the evening, in particular those guests who were unfortunate enough to be chosen to represent their tables in the centrepiece of the evening – the limerick competition.
