Greek Street, Glebe, is at the rear of the Broadway Shopping Centre, the same street that the Church of Scientology is now located. Prof. Sybil Jack, a member of the Glebe Society, has written an interesting article about the history of the street. Click_here to read the article.

As a descendent of Roderick McDonald, I found this very interesting reading. I hold a copy of John McDonald’s death certificate, and his occupation is listed as “Gentleman”. A very different picture of the man portrayed in the article.
It is also interesting that his stepdaughter did not acknowledge his first marriage or the 6 children of that marriage.
Roderick had a son (William Henry) in 1846 to Mary Bones then married Caroline Bond (Bourne) in July 1849.
Maybe his marriage to Margaret Fraser did not last very long.
Thank you for the article.
Surprising that a history of a street in Glebe named ‘Greek Street’ does not to mention how it got its name. Is it covered in some other article perhaps?
