Importantly, the Glebe Palmerston and Surrounds Landcare Group has reported that the City has set up some personal accident insurance to cover all volunteers, up to the age of 75, working in Glebe’s parks.

Several members of the Orphan School Creek Bush Care group attended the Lord Mayor’s Reception for volunteers and several representatives of bush care groups attended the presentation of a report on the survey the City of Sydney had commissioned to review reptiles and amphibians in the local government area.

Eleven keen birdwatchers gathered at 6.45am on Sunday 8 October in Paddy Gray Reserve, Hereford St, to commence Glebe’s fifth annual spring bird survey. The total number of birds recorded was 329 and 25 species were seen.

Five landcare/bushcare groups worked in Glebe throughout the year to support the establishment and maintenance of biodiversity in our suburb’s parks.

Retention of Dying Ficus in Jubilee Park

Last year a Ficus obliqua (Moreton Bay Fig) in Jubilee Park, close to the western entrance to the light rail tunnel in Victoria St, had almost died. The Society wrote to the City asking that the tree be retained and made safe by pruning The City accepted our request and the Ficus has now been expertly pruned and we look forward to seeing its use by Glebe’s native fauna.

At Benledi on 24 May, Professor Chris Dickman, Professor in Ecology from the University of Sydney, spoke to 34 members and their friends about the ‘Impacts and local management of cats, dogs and foxes’. Cats have had a devastating effect on Australia’s smallest mouse-like marsupials.

Jan died on 2 June 2016 at 74 years of age from a blood cancer, multiple myeloma. Jan was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable member of the Subcommittee.

Are there any blue wrens in Glebe? The answer over the past year is ‘sometimes’. During our second annual spring bird survey on Sunday 26 October 2014, local residents in Jarocin Ave reported that blue wrens, both male and female, are seen in their garden from time to time.
