Esther was a young mother when she arrived at Sydney Cove as a convict. Little did she expect to survive the hardships of an unknown landscape, starvation and isolation. But she not only survived but thrived. In the short space of 20 years she was the proud owner of land, a substantial home with surrounding productive gardens, and married to Lieutenant Governor George Johnston. It was not to last. Accused of madness, she was stripped of all she had made, her purpose and her independence.

Currently, one in seven Australian women are diagnosed with breast cancer and undergo an arduous regime of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and long-term medications often with difficult side effects.

The concert features a premiere by Brooke Green giving a personal response to these Amazonian transformations, including a setting of Fanny Burney’s graphic description of her mastectomy in 1811.
