Update (March 2026)

This photo was taken by Ted McKeown in 1992. It shows the foundations of the eastern tower of what started as the new Glebe Island Bridge renamed Anzac Bridge by Premier Bob Carr in 1998.

The bridge footings were completed in 1990 but work stopped in 1991 due to lack of funding. Work recommenced on the western tower (Glebe Island) in 1992 and was completed before work started on the eastern (Pyrmont) tower. Presumably because the builders wanted to reuse the formwork.

Rodney Hammett was the sole identifier of the photo as being the foundation of one of the towers. He thought it was the western side but an enlargement shows the lawns of Glebe High School (renamed in 2002 Sydney Secondary College Blackwattle Bay Campus) which can’t be seen from the Glebe Island side.
