Some of this State’s most influential early architects lived in Glebe and some of their work still survives here :

Edmund Blacket (1817-1883) who lived in Glebe for 13 years (at Bidura, which he designed) whilst overseeing his commission for Sydney University. Blacket is regarded as a great ecclesiastical architect and was responsible (with John Horbury Hunt) for St Johns Bishopthorpe in Glebe Point Road.

Old Court House
Old Court House

James Barnet (1827-1904) was Colonial Architect for 25 years and designer of the GPO and Lands Department buildings in the city. He lived for many decades in Forest Lodge was also the architect for a group of local civic buildings, namely Glebe’s former Post Office, the Police Station and former Court House.

George Mansfield (1834-1908), Australian-born and the first President of the Institute of Architects of NSW. Ten of his surviving buildings are listed on the State Heritage Register, including Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA), the Macleay Museum and History House. He designed Italianate extensions to John Verge’s Toxteth Park (now St Scholastica’s).
