In Focus photo competition – August 2026

We have three interesting photos this month: thanks Jane Gatwood, Dale Dengate and Phillip Vergison for your entries.

Dale’s photo ‘Wattle from the Ferry’ is a well-composed and surprising view of Glebe. It almost looks like we are deep in the bush somewhere, but with a late Victorian house emerging from a glorious colourful profusion of wattle. There’s also a quirkiness, with the windows of Bellevue Cottage poking over the wattle like a pair of eyes, with the moody sky above.

It is amazing how different a street can look at night. In ‘Street at Night’ Phillip has captured interesting light, changing an ordinary street into a moody, almost eerie scene, with shadows of the branches and bushes, and the empty windows evocative of past lives.

Our winner this month is Jane’s ‘Rainy Night in Glebe’, a crisp clear shot of lights and reflections on Glebe Point Road, making us all recall the recent ‘big wet’. It’s a very ‘now’ shot, busy but fun, with the colours, the shine, the NAIDOC poster, and the bare branches and fallen leaves that signify we really are in winter. And of course, the ubiquitous e-bikes!

Congratulations to Jane, who will go into the running for our Photo of the Year, and the prize of two free tickets for one of next year’s Glebe Society Guided Walks or a Glebe Talks event. The winning photograph will be published in the first edition of the Bulletin next year.

Enter your photos!

We are really keen to see and share your photos, particularly of interesting subjects. Please make sure your photos are very clear, high-resolution images. Sadly, we’ve not been able to accept some recent entries because they are just too blurry for publication. The picture might look OK on a phone, but not when enlarged on a screen. Before clicking the shutter or the smartphone button, take a moment to compose your photo, set your focus and take care to keep a steady hand. Take multiple shots, to have a better chance of capturing a good shot with clear details.
