The Glebe Society has received a request to distribute notice of a rally to protest against elements of the Common Ground proposal in Camperdown. Though it is not in Glebe, the issue is an important one and some members may wish to attend the rally. See below. Lesley Lynch, President.
On August 3rd 2009 the Premier announced, NSW Commits to Common Ground. Our community park bordered by Pyrmont Bridge Road, Lyons Road, Lambert Street and Layton Street is the chosen site. It has been a community park for 40 years and is well utilised by all.
The development also incorporates the demolition of four Heritage listed Dept of Housing cottages, which means four families have to be relocated.
Whilst we applaud the initiative of the Government to tackle the problem of homelessness our park is an inappropriate site.
On Sunday 29th November we will be holding a rally in the park at 12 noon. I would be most grateful if you could distribute this to your members.
Many thanks,
Paula Murray

The sacrifice of a park is a small price to pay to house some of the city’s most vulnerable and neglected people. It is disappointing (but not suprising) that people who have so much are unwilling to relinquish a small part of their lifestylr to accommodate others with so little. So much for Glebe being a suburb “with a strong sense of community”.
