By Fiona Campbell and Ted McKeown, Bulletin 07/2026 September 2026

How does Council manage and protect heritage places in the City of Sydney area? What heritage places are there in Glebe and Forest Lodge? Is your home subject to heritage rules?

In the July 2026 Bulletin, we reported that Council had at long last started to implement its 2021 resolution to review the City’s website for heritage information resources. The good news is that new pages on heritage information are now live, providing answers to these and other questions. See https://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/built-environment/heritage

Alternatively, just type ‘Heritage’ in the search bar at the top of Council’s homepage (www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au). Or scroll down the home page to ‘Heritage’ in the section entitled ‘Building & construction’.

The new Heritage section offers the following options and links to resources on other websites:

It is hard to understand why heritage information resources on City of Sydney’s website have been so inadequate when compared with information provided by some other Sydney councils. But we do appreciate the thought that Council staff have now put into the development of the new information and the improved organisation of other information.

Advice from Council is that they are now looking at options to update the community about the new webpages and resources.

Thanks to all the Glebe Society people who have contributed to lots of meetings with Council and other community groups, and for their suggestions over many years which have kept nudging this along.
