By Jane Poole, Addi Road Volunteer and Glebe Society member, Bulletin 09/2025, November

We know that members like to support an organisation that assists people who may otherwise struggle over Christmas and the holidays. This year, the Society is encouraging its members to support the Addi Road Food Pantry.
About Addi Road
Addison Road Community Organisation (Addi Road) has been responding to community needs in the inner west since 1976. Based in Marrickville, Addi Road is a registered charity and multicultural community centre committed to building a fairer and more connected community through food security, social justice, arts and culture. In 2015, Addi Road opened its first food pantry in Marrickville. This quickly became a lifeline for people experiencing hardship and a hub for reducing food waste. Building on this success, Addi Road opened a second food pantry in Camperdown at 31 Bridge Road in 2020 to meet a growing need in Glebe, Forest Lodge, Camperdown and beyond. People visiting the Addi Road Pantry at Camperdown include:
• residents of subsidised and affordable housing who rely on the pantry for vital support
• locals focussed on sustainability who want to shop ethically and reduce food waste
• people with physical or mental health challenges or experiencing hardship.
More than 100 people volunteer at the Camperdown Centre, including pantry users themselves. As well as giving back, volunteering at the pantry may offer people a second chance to build skills, re-enter the workforce and feel part of something bigger. For others, it offers friendship and social connection.
Partnerships
The Camperdown Pantry partners with other local organisations. It supplies food to the Glebe Youth Service to help reach young people and families who cannot always make it to the pantry. The Sze Yup temple in Glebe donates flowers to the pantry every week, bringing colour and joy. In recognition of the vital role pets play as a source of comfort and companionship, Animal Rescue Cooperative and Petbarn Foundation make regular donations of dog food. Mission Australia supports residents in the adjoining social housing complex, and the pantry provides affordable food and a welcoming hub at their doorstep.
Your support
To help the Addi Road Camperdown Food Pantry make Christmas special for local participants, Glebe Society members could consider the following options:
• A tax-deductible donation. Go to https://addiroad.org.au/donate/ or make a direct bank transfer to:
o Name: Addi Road Foundation Limited
o BSB: 633 000, Account No: 189 568 819
o Please include your name as a reference and a tax receipt will be issued.
• Food Donations. These must be non-perishable and unopened. For this Christmas, the pantry is specifically seeking basic food items such as rice, pasta, tinned vegetables, soups, sauces, cereal, long-life milk, sugar, cooking oil and anything you’d consider a small treat to share with a family over the holiday break.
• Everyday household and personal items such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, women’s sanitary and incontinence pads, shampoo, conditioner and cleaning products (dishwashing liquid, laundry powder etc) are all gratefully received to help people through the pantry’s two-week Christmas closure.
