In a recent public statement, Glebe Youth Service CEO, Mitra Gusheh, and Chair of the Management Committee, Dr. Elizabeth (Libby) Hindmarsh, have announced that GYS will become an Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisation (ACCO). They said that this reflects a commitment to self-determination, recognising the fact that more than 70% of GYS’ users identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. The move will enable GYS to employ more Aboriginal staff alongside the existing team in permanent roles, ensure programs are led by lived experience, and secure sustainable resources for the future.

The CEO and Chair have committed to stepping down to create space for First Nations leadership and to actively support the transition process.

They said that the decision is about strengthening how the organisation serves young people and the community. The transition represents a commitment to walk the talk on self-determination, but GYS will remain a welcoming place for all members of the community.

‘We wish Glebe Youth Service well under this new arrangement”, said Duncan Leys, President of the Glebe Society. “GYS is an important organisation, but it has been plagued with uncertain and inadequate funding. We hope that this will put them on a firmer footing, so more able to concentrate on their primary role of supporting young people to reach their potential.’
