Celebrating 150 years of Glebe’s history

2009 is the 150th anniversary of the creation of Glebe as a municipality. Residents, Government agencies and local businesses are invited to join in the celebration of Glebe’s rich and vibrant past and present.

In 1859 the residents of Glebe presented a petition to the Governor, requesting that Glebe be incorporated as a suburb. The official Proclamation incorporating The Glebe was signed by Governor Denison on 1st August 1859, and published in the Government Gazette the following day.

Fifty years later, in 1909, the suburb celebrated its Jubilee in style. The Governor of the day opened the fountain that still marks the start of Glebe Point Road and an honour guard of students from Glebe Public School lined the road for the occasion.

There  will be  a number of community and cultural events throughout the year.

The first official event will be on Sunday 2nd August from 11:00am–12:00pm
