A very well attended public meeting unanimously passed a resolution calling on the State Government to immediately cease all work and all contract negotiations on WestConnex until the findings of the Australian National Audit Office which is now investigating the project are announced.

Candidates for the seat of Sydney at the federal election fielded questions about Westconnex, council mergers, affordable housing and indigenous affairs at a meeting arranged by the Glebe Society at the Glebe Town Hall on Saturday 25 June.

Opposition to WestConnex Heats Up

WestConnex recently released its plans for the Glebe/Forest Lodge sections of the WestConnex project. These involve road tunnels running beneath our suburb, with spaghetti junction interchanges centered around the Rozelle goods yards and on Parramatta Road in Camperdown.

The Past and Future Trams of Glebe

Steam trams ran from 1882 to Cook St, Glebe; with a small extension to Pendrill/Leichhardt Sts in 1896. Horse buses were more widespread, from Millers Point to Lyndhurst and to Forest Lodge. Electric trams ran from 1900.

Transport and traffic matters this year were dominated by the WestConnex project, the $15 billion road and tunnel tollway announced by the State Government back in 2012 which is now being constructed.

An Inner West Transport Solution?

The inner West faces worsening traffic congestion with redevelopment of the Bays Area and Plans for WestConnex to feed vehicles onto the Anzac Bridge and Victoria Rd.
Yet there is a simple, low-cost way to reduce congestion in our neighbourhood: re-open Glebe Island Bridge as a level, broad, safe pedestrian link between Rozelle and Pyrmont.

Draft Neighbourhood Parking Policy, and our Submission

Residents are invited to have their say regarding the discussion paper for the Development of Neighbourhood Parking Policy. The aim is to standardise the policy across the LGA and remove discrepancies and illegal activity. It is important to remember that will be an increase of traffic in the near future. Whilst Glebe/Forest Lodge has not had the pressures that other villages have experienced, there will be changes. Of paramount importance is to preserve parking for local residents.

The Glebe Society has urged the Government to lessen the emphasis on the motor car and increase the emphasis on walking in its long-term planning for transport in New South Wales. The Society makes this point in response to a discussion paper issued by Government as part of the process of developing its new Long-term Transport Master Plan.
