Anzac Day Glebe 2018

The Anzac Day service was held at Foley Park at 7.30am on Wednesday 25 April. The service was led by Rev Mark Wormell, Rector of St John’s, Glebe. Max Solling addressed the gathering.

Forty-three members attended the 48th Annual General Meeting held on Sunday 20 August in the Glebe Town Hall.
After the formalities, the guest speaker, Senior Constable Renee Fortuna, spoke to the members about her work with the youth of Glebe.

This was made evident by the number and diversity of people who rose to speak about her impact on them and their corner of Glebe, and to offer their condolences to Lynne, her partner.

The Society’s Anzac Centenary Lecture was organised to complement the theme of its Anzac Centenary Program exhibition Sacrifice, Struggle and Sorrow shown in the Southern Hall at Glebe Town Hall, October 7-23, 2015. The lecture was delivered by Professor Paul Ashton on Tuesday October 13.

The Upper Foyer is a beautiful architect designed venue, part of the new Barneys created on the site of the church building destroyed by fire in 2006.

Bernard Smith was one of the founders of The Glebe Society in 1969. He and his wife Kate were responsible for the definitive book on Glebe heritage – “The Architectural Character of Glebe”. He was an eminent art historian, writer, professor of fine arts at the University of Sydney, and a beloved member of the Glebe Society. We invite all members and non-members to attend an event to celebrate Bernard and Kate Smith’s contribution to ensuring the continued existence of Glebe in face of the threat to bulldoze us out of existence in favour of a free-way.

As part of History Week, Robert Dixon, Professor of Australian Literature at the University of Sydney, who has recently published a book about Hurley’s shows, will provide his own “synchronised lecture entertainment” in Glebe, the suburb where Hurley was born in 1885. Members and friends are invited to meet in restaurants in and around Glebe, usually on the first Thursday of each month at 7pm, to eat and talk with other people who live in Glebe. We visit a different restaurant each month, with varying cuisines. Our next event will be on Thursday 2nd August when we will share a meal at Lien restaurant, 331 Glebe Point Road.

A Glebe Local Maker’s Market will be held on Sunday 2nd September, 2pm till 5pm. It is an opportunity for local Glebe people to show and sell their own handmade arts, crafts and produce. A joint initiative of the St John’s Centre, Glebe Assistance Partnership Program & the Starving Artists Collective Inc. Venue: St John’s Centre, 132 St Johns Road, Glebe.
