Heritage Subcommittee Annual Report 2025

The Heritage Subcommittee met monthly in 2025 to research, advocate, and engage with the public on Glebe’s history and heritage. It reviewed 107 DAs, responded to public queries, published articles, and contributed to heritage policy.

The subcommittee and the bushcare groups have made much progress in the past year towards increasing the diversity, abundance and distribution of indigenous fauna and flora in Glebe–Forest Lodge.

Obituary: Grahame Murray Budd (1930–2025)

Grahame Budd, longtime Glebe resident and pioneer of Australian Antarctic science, died in June, aged 95. Read about Grahame’s life and legacy, including the first ascent of active volcano Big Ben, the highest mountain on Australian territory.

The shared pedestrian-cyclist footpath by the new Sydney Fish Market

The shared pedestrian–cyclist path at the new Fish Market poses serious safety risks. With foot traffic expected to increase and no separation of pedestrians from bikes, accidents are inevitable.

Update on Bridge Road

Bridge Road remains a key city route amid disruptive, noisy works. Safety concerns over the permanent cycleway persist, with limited transparency and mounting community frustration.

Report on Bridge Road Cycleway Public Meeting

At a packed 6 July meeting, safety auditor Zoran Bakovic presented his Bridge Road cycleway audit. The Transport Minister and departmental reps were absent. Locals voted against the proposed design.

Glebe Society AGM: You are invited

Numbers 1 and 3 Avon Street were long-time homes of sisters Elizabeth and Christine (born Young). Elizabeth’s husband, Captain Kay, spent years at sea and had many adventures.

Wesley Mission to take RJ Williams site at Glebe to market

Wesley Mission is selling the RJ Williams Lodge site (274 Glebe Point Road) because it’s been unable to obtain the funding required to re-purpose the building for much-needed affordable housing.

Secondary dwelling at 32 St Johns Road – a ‘modern interpretation’ of heritage

Council approved a rear dwelling at 32 St Johns Road in the St Phillips Heritage Conservation Area (HCA). Neighbour Lyn Milton says it clashes with DCP rules for secondary/laneway dwellings in HCAs.
