Posted on 29th July 2016A very successful public meeting was held in Glebe Town Hall on 20 June. A panel of experts focused on providing information. They covered governance, transport, geology, health and the City of Sydney’s opposition to WestConnex.

Glebe Island Bridge Can Link White Bay with the CBD

Planning Report (August 2016)
Posted on 29th July 2016The controversial Bidura development proposal, including any amendments and heritage recommendations, will now be determined by the Land and Environment Court. Council will hold a meeting with the objectors, and because there are quite a few, that meeting will be held in Glebe Town Hall on Monday 8 August at 6pm

Dogs Gone? Baird’s Promise: Wentworth Park to be a ‘Community Space’
Posted on 29th July 2016Members of The Glebe Society will have differing views about whether greyhound racing should be banned, but I think we can all agree about what should happen when the dogs leave Wentworth Park. Since at least 1878, Wentworth Park has been dedicated in perpetuity as ‘a park or place for public recreation’

Leadlights
Posted on 5th July 2016The Heritage Subcommittee has considered many different options for celebrating and focussing attention on this aspect of our Victorian and Federation houses.
We have decided that the Glebe Society website offers the best medium for showing off the glorious colours and designs of some of Glebe’s beautiful leadlights. We envisage including on the website a selection of pictures of leadlight styles, mentioning the street, but without identifying the specific house pictured.

School Playground Fundraising Drive
Posted on 5th July 2016The Society has received a letter from Anna Playford, President of the Glebe Public School P&C asking for assistance with replacing playground equipment.

Should the Remand Centre at Bidura Be Preserved?
Posted on 5th July 2016On 15 June, the Glebe Society made a further submission in relation to the Stage 1 DA for Bidura. One matter that was not dealt with by our original submission was the possible retention and adaptive reuse of the Remand Centre.

Built Environment 2037
Posted on 5th July 2016A very well attended public meeting unanimously passed a resolution calling on the State Government to immediately cease all work and all contract negotiations on WestConnex until the findings of the Australian National Audit Office which is now investigating the project are announced.

White Bay Power Station
Posted on 5th July 2016However on 9 June UrbanGrowth announced none of the proposals received for the renewal of the highly significant White Bay Power Station complied sufficiently with the Government’s evaluation criteria and that as a result, UrbanGrowth would itself become the master developer for the site.

Bays Precinct Developments

Sydney Superyacht Marina – Over-development Will Go Ahead
Posted on 5th July 2016On 15 June the NSW Planning Assessment Commission (PAC) released its determination on the contentious modifications sought by the Superyacht Marina in Rozelle Bay. Over the last year the Glebe Society and other community members had opposed the central elements of this proposal as inappropriate over-development of the site and contrary to public interest.

Bernard Smith Honoured by the Release of New Books
Posted on 5th July 2016Bernard Smith, the ‘founding father’ of the Glebe Society, is being honoured this month by the release of a new biography and collection of essays.

Posted on 5th July 2016Concerned locals handed out flyers identifying the multitude of coffee shops and restaurants which already provided good service and could potentially be disadvantaged by the increased competition a multi-national might provide. That night, some intemperate and cowardly person chose to express his/her opposition to the temporary development by hurling a brick through its window.

WestConnex the Hot Topic at Federal Candidates’ Debate
Posted on 1st July 2016Candidates for the seat of Sydney at the federal election fielded questions about Westconnex, council mergers, affordable housing and indigenous affairs at a meeting arranged by the Glebe Society at the Glebe Town Hall on Saturday 25 June.
