Working Bee in Paddy Gray Reserve – 2nd May

May 2, 2012
9:15 amto11:30 am
Wednesday 2nd May, 9:15 am till 11:30 am  (weather permitting, otherwise 9 May)

at the Paddy Gray Reserve (between Hereford Street and Wigram Lane, beside 57 Hereford Street)

Join the Glebe Society’s Blue Wrens, members from the Glebe Bushcare Group, Rozelle Bay Community Native Nursery & City of Sydney staff & contractors for a working bee at Paddy Gray Reserve (local National Tree Day site in 2010 & 2008).  The focus this time will be on grasses & ground covers. We’ll look at what’s already growing in the reserve, learn a little from Council’s Ecology Manager,  Katie Oxenham about native grasses & plant a few more in bare spaces. And there’s always weeding! And working out what should happen next to make the reserve more blue-wren friendly.  If you don’t want to pull out weeds & add a few infill plants, come & have morning tea with the workers at about 10:30 am.  You’ll need to wear socks & strong shoes &comfortable old clothes that protect you from sun and scratches. If you can, bring your garden gloves & trowel (some will be available). It would also help if you could bring your own filled thermos & mug.

2009 is the 150th anniversary of the creation of Glebe as a municipality. Residents, Government agencies and local businesses are invited to join in the celebration of Glebe’s rich and vibrant past and present.

In 1859 the residents of Glebe presented a petition to the Governor, requesting that Glebe be incorporated as a suburb. The official Proclamation incorporating The Glebe was signed by Governor Denison on 1st August 1859, and published in the Government Gazette the following day.

Fifty years later, in 1909, the suburb celebrated its Jubilee in style. The Governor of the day opened the fountain that still marks the start of Glebe Point Road and an honour guard of students from Glebe Public School lined the road for the occasion.

June 12, 2009
7:30 pmto8:30 pm

St Scholastica’s College in Avenue Road, Glebe, will hold an Aboriginal art exhibition from 12-14 June to showcase the talents of emerging indigenous artists, including some work by the school’s own talented students. St Scholastica’s College has a long history of successfully educating young indigenous women. The Sisters of the Good Samaritan started the tradition in the early 70s and, as the need has become greater, the College has accepted more indigenous girls in both the day and boarding college. At present in the boarding college there are 20 students from isolated and regional areas in NSW including Walgett and Dubbo and 35 in the day school, who come from suburbs in Sydney.

The community is invited to attend the exhibition. A gala evening will be held on Fridav, 12 June, from 7.30pm and Deborah Cameron of ABC Radio will open the exhibition. The school’s indigenous dance group also will perform.

It promises to be an exciting and festive evening and a great exhibition with lots of affordable art.  Should  vou wish to attend please phone 9660 2622.
