Celebrate the Glebe Sesquicentenary with a Rowing Regatta on Blackwattle Bay.
Saturday 29th August, starting at 10.00 a.m.
To mark their role in the sporting history of Glebe, The Glebe Rowing Club (formed in 1879) and The Sydney University Women’s Rowing Club (formed in 1967) are combining to hold a Rowing Regatta on Blackwattle Bay – the first for over ten years!
We can all be proud of Glebe’s sporting history – so come along to Blackwattle Bay Park next Saturday, cheer the rowers, and enjoy morning tea which will be provided in the Boatshed from 11 – 12 noon.
The races will start in line with the Sydney University pontoon (at the Boathouse) and finish in line with Bellevue in Blackwattle Bay Park – allowing spectators an excellent vantage point from the foreshore.
Crews from Sydney University Women’s and Glebe Rowing Clubs will race with rowers visiting from other local clubs. Men and women will race in each event.
Max Solling, author of The Boatshed on Blackwattle Bay, a history of the Glebe Rowing Club, will give a short talk on the ‘Rowers of Glebe’ in the Boatshed (at the end of Ferry Road), where there will be a display of Club memorabilia, along with morning tea from 11 – 12 noon. All are welcome.

Celebrating 150 years of Glebe’s history
2009 is the 150th anniversary of the creation of Glebe as a municipality. Residents, Government agencies and local businesses are invited to join in the celebration of Glebe’s rich and vibrant past and present.
In 1859 the residents of Glebe presented a petition to the Governor, requesting that Glebe be incorporated as a suburb. The official Proclamation incorporating The Glebe was signed by Governor Denison on 1st August 1859, and published in the Government Gazette the following day.
Fifty years later, in 1909, the suburb celebrated its Jubilee in style. The Governor of the day opened the fountain that still marks the start of Glebe Point Road and an honour guard of students from Glebe Public School lined the road for the occasion.
There will be a number of community and cultural events throughout the year.
The first official event will be on Sunday 2nd August from 11:00am–12:00pm

St Scholastica’s College in Avenue Road, Glebe, will hold an Aboriginal art exhibition from 12-14 June to showcase the talents of emerging indigenous artists, including some work by the school’s own talented students. Money raised by the exhibition will go to St Scolistaca’s Indigenous Fund to support current and future indigenous students.
St Scholastica’s College has a long history of successfully educating young indigenous women. The Sisters of the Good Samaritan started the tradition in the early 70s and, as the need has become greater, the College has accepted more indigenous girls in both the day and boarding college. At present in the boarding college there are 20 students from isolated and regional areas in NSW including Walgett and Dubbo and 35 in the day school, who come from suburbs in Sydney.
The community is invited to attend the exhibition. A gala evening will be held on Fridav, 12 June, from 7.30pm and Deborah Cameron of ABC Radio will open the exhibition. The school’s indigenous dance group also will perform.
It promises to be an exciting and festive evening and a great exhibition with lots of affordable art. Should vou wish to attend please phone 9660 2622.

The Wireless House in Foley Park is a unique part of Glebe’s history, a tiny building where many people gathered to listen to a wireless radio, donated by Grace Bros to the Glebe Council in 1934.
The artist, Dr Nigel Helyer, is working with the City of Sydney to ‘sonically re-activate’ the Wireless House and bring it back to life with a sculptural and interactive audio installation and website.
The Wireless House is looking for champions! Become involved and learn more about creating oral histories and publishing them online. Free oral history workshops:
1.00pm – 4.00pm
Wednesdays 10 June to 2 September
The Old Fire Station, Mitchell Street, Glebe.
